Welcome to the new web series by Kim Eulenstein of GSN. Kim has been busy travelling around with various pro-surfers filming first person interviews called Notepad. Each surfer has a blank page in the notepad to draw whatever their heart desires whilst being interviewed at the same time. They literally have a blank canvas to work with and the slight distraction of the artwork tends to bring out a few interesting mentions in the interview. Episode 1 of Notepad features former professional surfer Bec Woods talking about her very first Teahupoo experience as a wildcard at 18 years old. Oh, and her artwork is a dead-set masterpiece! :)
‘I got invited there when I was a wildcard when I was 18. It was my first wildcard and it was my first World Tour event, which was quite funny because it was at Teahupoo of all places. I think the first week I was there it didn’t get under 8ft… maybe 8-10ft and I was just sitting in a boat in the channel just thinking, I don’t even know how to pull in on my backhand. I haven’t been out of Australia.’ Said Bec when asked about her first experience.
‘My first heat there was against Layne Beachley and Rochelle Ballard and that was pretty intimidating too… however we just paddled out and I think the most intimidating thing about the whole wave is the wave itself so I was just thinking oh my gosh I don’t even care who I have in my heat, I just have to take off.’ Said Bec.
‘Yes, I’d definitely love to go back to Tahiti. I’d love to surf Teahupoo again without the pressure of a competition.’ Said Bec.
