This week I was lucky enough to catch up with Stand Up Paddle Board (SUP) Yoga Instructor, Di Morrison. Di manages SUP Yoga Sydney and mainly operates in the calm waters of Narrabeen Lakes, Sydney Australia.
It was a crisp Autumn morning, about 10° outside when I met Di for a coffee on the sand at Freshwater Beach. It was a stunning 3 – 4ft, clean, offshore wave constantly rolling in and Di was absolutely busting for a surf. So I kept our meeting short. No way was I getting in the way of that!
Di began surfing when she moved over here from the UK. Stand up paddle (SUP) surfing always came easier to her than surfing on her first board, a 6ft 6”. She felt more stable on a bigger board and found it easier to choose and paddle on to the waves.
A qualified Yoga Instructor and a lover of the outdoors, Di combined the two and began teaching SUP Yoga. “I just like being outdoors so much more, especially when it’s such a nice day outside’ Di explained. You could just tell, sitting with Di how comfortable and at peace she is when sorrounded by the ocean.
Di went on to talk about the benefits of Yoga and more specifically, the benefits of SUP Yoga for surfing. Engaging various muscles throughout your body when balancing and practicing Yoga on a SUP board is a unique way to get a total body workout. Di explained that there are many different forms of Yoga today, all with their specific benefits. I could tell that with the large amount of knowledge she was passing on to me, she was still only scratching at the surface.
I must admit, I have never participated in a Yoga class. I’ve heard about the benefits from friends and various readings but had never taken the advice and practiced it myself. After sitting with Di for 30 minutes on the beach, I can say with confidence that this is definitely something I am now excited to try. The benefits of a practice that has been taking place for centuries, the peaceful environment, the total body workout when practicing on a SUP board all adds to this amazing experience.
